On 24th November 2017 we, Radka Petersen and Veronika MacLeod, took part in the Grand Re-opening of the Czech Embassy in London. Our visit was organised on behalf of the SCS Fund and the whole Czech-Slovak community in Scotland. The aim was to make our organisation known in London and to meet teachers from other Czech schools around Britain. The evening was festive and original in many ways, with many artistic and culinary delights on offer. The guests were very generously catered for; the treats included typical Czech dishes, Pilsner Urquell beer, Moravian wines, and even Beton, an ultimate Czech retro mixed drink of Becherovka and tonic. One of our main hopes prior to the trip was to speak to Mr Alex Brychta MBE, a world acclaimed British children’s book illustrator, originally from Prague. To our delight, we did meet Mr Brychta and enjoyed a very inspiring talk with him about his amazing artistic career and also about his early life in the UK. Furthermore, we were lucky enough to be introduced to his close friend, the famous Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines. They both expressed an interest in visiting Edinburgh in future and giving a talk to our community about their life and work. We sincerely hope we will be able to organise such an event and thus make our trip to London truly fruitful. Our visit to the Czech Embassy was most enjoyable and interesting and we thoroughly enjoyed representing our Scotland based community.
